A vacinação é uma das medidas mais importantes para prevenção de doenças infecciosas. Quando uma pessoa é vacinada, o seu sistema imunológico é estimulado a produzir anticorpos contra o agente causador da doença. Dessa forma, quando ela é exposta a esse agente no futuro, seu sistema imunológico já está preparado para combatê-lo. A imunidade coletiva é um fenômeno em que a vacinação em massa de uma população previne a disseminação de doenças infecciosas. O programa nacional de vacinação é um conjunto de estratégias do governo para garantir o acesso da população a vacinas gratuitas e seguras.
