A motivação popular nas Cruzadas
O povo, para quem os árabes eram por toda parte objeto de horror e de ódio, já se mostrava muito propenso a persegui-los. O comércio que eles faziam tinha posto em suas mãos uma grande parte do ouro que circulava na Europa. A vista de suas riquezas devia irritar os cruzados, que na maior parte tinham sido reduzidos a implorar a caridade dos fiéis, para realizar a sua peregrinação. É também provável que os árabes tenham insultado com suas zombarias o entusiasmo dos cristãos pela Cruzada. Todos esses motivos, reunidos à sede do saque, acenderam o fogo da perseguição.
