Quando um historiador escolhe um tema de estudo, passa a recolher materiais sobre o mesmo. A matéria-prima do historiador são as fontes: documentos oficiais do Estado, publicações em geral (livros, revistas, jornais), depoimentos de pessoas, documentos de polícia, laudos médicos, roupas, canções, fotografias, vestígios arqueológicos, enfim, indícios a partir dos quais o profissional de História tentará conhecer melhor seu tema e responder às perguntas que faz a esse tema. Vamos usar um exemplo para entender isso melhor.
Imagine que você não tenha tido a oportunidade de conviver com seus avós e outros parentes mais velhos. Você então passará os olhos pelos álbuns fotográficos de sua família e este passeio lhe permitirá criar uma impressão sobre ela, as formas de vestir, as festas, os modos e expressões das pessoas. [...]
Perceba, portanto, que o documento não é o todo da História, não é o seu espelho, sua reprodução. Uma informação, por si só, não possui um sentido histórico. Não basta que você veja uma foto de sua bisavó em 1910 ou que investigue qual era o seu nome para conhecer a história dessa mulher. Um registro se torna fonte quando é trabalhado historicamente. Por esse motivo é que memorizar fatos, nomes e datas não é estudar História.
