Last Thursday in Wales, a part of the United Kingdom, a 19-year-old woman had to be rushed to the hospital. But there was one problem: she was too big to fit through the door of her house. That’s because she weighs about 380 kilograms.

People had to cut a hole through the wall of her house and carry her out. How does a 19-year-old become so overweight? Well, maybe that’s not the right question to ask. Maybe the question should be how have 500 million people in the world become overweight?

This isn’t just a story about one 19-year-old in one country, but about half a billion overweight people in the world. Of course, they don’t all weigh 380 kilograms, but they weigh more than they should which means they are obese.

The World Health Organization, or WHO, was created by the United Nations in 1948, and it announced these numbers two weeks ago. This organization studies health and diseases in the world, and it also announced that obesity in the world has doubled in the past 30 years. In other words, there are now twice as many obese people in the world as there were in 1983. 

Not surprisingly, they found that the basic problem is that people are exercising less and eating more and worse food. But the surprising thing is that people everywhere in the world are getting fatter. It has become not only a problem in places like the United States and the United Kingdom where this story began, but also in parts of the world like Asia and Africa.

A fatter world means that health care will become more expensive. It also means that workers will become less productive. And, most importantly, it means that people will have more health problems, and live shorter lives.

If our children are fatter than us, then what will our grandchildren, be like? And what will a more overweight world, where people eat more and exercise less, be like?

That 19-year-old woman from Wales is currently being treated at the hospital, and she is getting better. But the problem of her weight, and the entire world’s weight, is not getting better. Every year, and in almost every part of the world, it continues to get worse.
